Day 1 - Friday
Packing and picking up Kurt. Got groceries for 7 days and took off around 7:00pm from Mount Uniacke. 3 hour drive to Moncton. Stayed there for about a hour with a friend. Then hit the road.
Day 2 - Saturday
6 hours later we arriverd in Matane. We then got on the ferry and left for Godbout at
8:00AM. 2:30 hours later we arriverd and drove to Baie-Comeau. Fueled up
and headed down the 389 into the wilderness. 215km later we got to the
Daniel Johnson Dam. Largest of its kind in the world. From there anather
200km along a gravel highway until we reached an old abandoned iron ore mine. We saw one black bear.
We drove through it and got to a snow drift. My car could not get through it.
John and Jim drove their truck through pulling the camper. They took off to
a dam and setup for the night. Then ame back to pull my civic through the snow.
By this time it was too lake to go where we planned so we stayed the night
in the camper at a dam.
Day 3 - Sunday
Kurt and myself get on the ATV and go to lake 30km north to find out how
its doin before we drag a camper up there along a slow rough road.
We get there and its frozen solid. And there are snow drifts everwhere. We
see an amazing sight. The road goes along side the lake. On the other side
of the lake is a small body of water. It's about 6 feet lower than the lake.
But in this body of water is a dand bar shaped like a donut. The inner part
is about 6 feet in diameter and is very deep. But the bar is to the surface.
In the middle it looks like the sand is boiling up in the water. So its like
there's sand clouds in the water actively moving and hitting the surface. Its
is where an undergraoug river enpties from the larger lake. It was the coolest
little thing I've ever seen in nature.
Day 4 - Monday
Since the lake we want is frozen and there are snow drifts everywhere, we decide
to pack up this day and go camp at Gagnon down the 389 from the mine. Its a ghost
town. Used to house the people who worked in two mines in the area. The town was abolished in 1985.
Day 5 - Tuesday
Kurt and myself hop into the car and head back down the 389 about 50kms to a hiking trail.
We end up bushwacking. We found a river in the woods. Found trails on the oher side of this
river. And we found no way to cross it.
Day 6 - Wednesday
We drive about 40km to a mountain thats near the 389. We bushwack to it about half a km and
then we start climbing. Zig zaging our way to the top. Climbing along the edges of cliffs in
the woods and fighting frozen brooks and sloshing throught the snow. By 2 in the afternoon. About
three hours later we are at the top. We are at 3100 feet. Ans are above the tree line. Its
extremely windy. We ate lunch at the top. To the south and the east we could see a huge vista of
neighboring mountains and their rocky snowy tops. To the west and north we can view the Manicougan
and other mountaind and rivers along side of it. It was a extremely beautiful sight as you can see
the clouds dodging the mountains and raining over areas. We make our way south down the mountain a
safer side. We follow a river down to a lake at the bottom. On the other side of the lake is a cabin.
We travel around the lake, and over a beaver dam to the cabin. From there we follow a path to the
road where the car is parked. It was a beautiful hike. I got a soaker cause the water runs under the snow
and I went throught the snow into the brook at one point. Why did I ever leave my snowshoes home in June?
Day 7 - Thursday
On this day we take the ATV accross Gagnon and along a air strip and then p a ATV trail. But the mud was too overwelming and the cold was too much. So we went back to the camper and had lunch. Then it started to snow. So bored we were, we thought we'd drive to Labrador City. It's anather 200km north. So we go. Along the way is a 90km strech of paved road. For about 40 kms of this the forest is burnt to a crisp. Huge amounts of forested were toasted. Then we hit some low lying lands full of water flooding forests. On this 100km section is a also the railway. The road was the most enjoyable road I've ever been on. It was windy, twisted, narrow, loose gravel, often flooded road that was flerting with the a rail line. It was the coolest rally like course I've been on. So my Civic Hatchback and I had some real fun there! WOW Any way, kurt and myself tour throgh Fermont, the town owned and operated by the mining company. Then head over to Labrador City and add anather provence to our list of provences we've been to. So us two dirty mountain people go into the local mall, eat lunch, collect beer and donuts and head back to camp 200km south with our Homer Simpson special. By now it stopped snowing.
Day 8 - Friday
We play in the slury at the mine and play on the eskers with the car. We breakdown our camp
site and pack the car for the journey home the next day.
Day 9 - Saturday
Drive drive and drive south. Past the dam. Into Baie-Comeau. Wait for the ferry. Hop on it. Cross to the Gasp. Then buy beer in 1.18 liter bottles and drive and drive and drive to moncton where we have showers finaly and stay the night.
We saw...
69 Porcupine7 Mosquitoes
6 and a half rabit*
6 Groundhogs
6 Squirl
5 Ospray
2 Deer
2 Bear
1 fox
1 Bald Eagle
*We don't count dead animals. But we saw the fox carrying a rabit for dinner. It was dead. But technically moving still. So we gave this rabit a half mark.
